New Season

It was opening day in Nats Town
The grass was cut and the field was lined
All the fans were dressed in white and red
Popcorn, hot dogs, and cold beer
Was the fare of the day
The field looked like a sea of green
When I walked out from the ramp
I could hear music playing and people cheering
The home town team had taken the field
Like little white ants in their uniforms
From my upper deck bleacher seats
As they took infield and batting practice
The umpires were meeting with the managers
Going over the ground rules
Flags were flying as the sun cast shadows
On the scoreboard the score zero to zero
No runs, no hits, no errors
As the pitcher warmed up in the bullpen
I settled myself in for a long afternoon
My seats were in the front row
Up against the rail
It would take a mighty blow
To hit a ball this far
The announcer said
Please rise and remove your hats
As we sing the National Anthem
A voice came over the loudspeaker
Singing my favorite springtime song

The umpire cried out "Play Ball"
The coaches took their bases
The players took their stance
As the batter took some practice swings
The pitcher took the mound
To throw the first pitch of the year
At last there is renewed hope
For these boys of summer
Spring is finally here.
