What Is Love

What is the definition of love?

Webster's 1913 Dictionary defines it as:

1. a feeling of strong attachment induced by that which delights or commands admiration; preeminent kindness or devotion to another; affection; tenderness; as, the love of brothers and sisters.  2. especially, devoted attachment to, or tender or passionate affection for, one of the opposite sex.  3. Courtship;- chiefly in the phrase to make love, i.e., to court, to woo, to solicit union in marriage.  4 affection; kind feeling; friendship; strong liking or desire; fondness; good will; - opposed to hate; often with of and an object.  5. due gratitude and reverence to God.  6. the object of affection; - often employed in endearing address; as, he held his love in his arms; his greatest love was reading.  7. cupid the god of love; sometimes, Venus.  8. a thin silk stuff.  9. (Botany) a climbing species of clematis (clematis vitalba).  10. nothing; no points scored on one side; - used in counting score at tennis, etc.  11. sexual intercourse; - a euphemism.

50 years later:

Webster's New World Dictionary College Edition Copyright 1964 defines it as:

1. a strong affection for or attachment or devotion to a person or persons.  2. a strong liking for or interest in something: as, her love of acting.  3. a strong usually passionate , affection for a person of the opposite sex.  4. the person who is the object of such an affection: sweetheart, lover.  5. sexual passion or its gratification. 6. [Latin], a) Cupid, or Eros, as the god of love, b) [Rare] Venus.  7. [ < phrase. play for love, i.e., play for nothing], in tennis, a score of zero.  8. in theology, a) Gods benevolent concern for mankind. b) man's devout attachment to God. c)the feeling of benevolence and brotherhood that people should have for each other.

Another 50 years later:

Merriam-Webster's Online Collegiate Dictionary Updated for 2014 defines it as:

1. a: (1)  strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties love for a child. (2) attraction based on sexual desire, affection and tenderness felt by lovers. (3) affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests. b: an assurance of affection love.  2. warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion3. a:  the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration love. b: (1) a beloved person:  darling —often used as a term of endearment, (2) British —used as an informal term of address.  4. a: unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: as (1): the fatherly concern of God for humankind. (2): brotherly concern for others. b: a person's adoration of God.  5. a god or personification of love. 6. an amorous episode:  love affair.  7. the sexual embrace:  copulation.  8. a score of zero (as in tennis).  9. capitalized Christian Science :  god.

Not sure exactly what year "opposite sex" was taken out of the passionate affection of others thing, it was still there in the sixties, its gone now. By 1964 the soliciting union of marriage was out and replaced by a sweetheart or lover. Now love is an attraction based on sexual desire among other things including admiration, benevolence, and common interest. Which I suppose means marriage is replaced with warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion.

100 years ago love was a nice term for sexual intercourse I guess because the word f... was not in the dictionary, but in the sixties intercourse was out and love meant sexual gratification (two words defined as having sex and being satisfied), but the word f... was still not in the dictionary. Now love is a nice term for copulation which is a nice word for f......., and the word f... is in the dictionary with its origin akin to Dutch breeding cattle.

As far as gods go Cupid and Venus are out and replaced by a god or personification of love. The word god is in, but only after an amorous episode, copulation, and a score of zero, not touching that one. Cupid the god of desire and passion went around shooting people with love arrows, and Venus, the mother of Cupid, was the god of spring, bloom, and beauty. Where are the love gods when we need them.

So what is love?

I think I'll stick to 1. strong affection for another. 2. strong interest in something. 3. concern for others. 4. the tennis definition of a score of zero. 5. sex (i.e. make a little love, do a little dance, get down tonight)

Love on brothers and sisters!

If Life Was a Book

If our life stories could be written down as time elements in a book would years be chapters, months be paragraphs, days be sentences, and hours be words? Or maybe decades would be chapters, years would be paragraphs, months sentences, and days words? If it was in years there would be a lot of chapters and how would we describe the chapters? Maybe if decades were used the chapters could be like "the beginning", "the teen years", "the twenties", etc. etc...or maybe I was born, I grew up, I got educated, fucked up, found a job, got married, had kids, worked, and grew old...could be one book that goes like this about a dude in his sixties...

Chapter 1
I Was Born

Don't remember much until about halfway through and then its still sketchy

Chapter 2
The Teen Years

Learned about sex, remember a little about high school, and gets sketchier as years go along due to smoking too much weed

Chapter 3
The Twenties

Some fucked up shit happened early and then don't remember much due to drinking too much

Chapter 4
The Thirties

Had to get straight from the teen years and twenties..

Chapter 5
The Forties

Got a real job so I could pay back Uncle Sam all the tax money I owed him

Chapter 6
The Fifties

My first credit card wow! Also my 3rd marriage?

Chapter 7
The Sixties

more to be revealed... better start watching what I eat and exercising if I want to write another chapter

Chapter 8
The Seventies

Hope I make it weed will be legal!

Chapter 9
The Eighties

Maybe the end? Hang in there old dude!

Chapter 10
The Nineties

Most likely the end...but hey maybe all that yoga and juicing in chapter 7 worked?

Chapter 11
The Hundreds

Where the hell am I.. and who are you?

Ok so anyway that's just one example of a life written as a book outline. This one is definitely a keep it simple stupid one..it could be much more detailed if this person had only paid a little better attention. I am certain that some people could write a novel about their life but most lives can easily be summed up in a few words. There is no moral, its just a story.

Keep writing your book!!
