Help To Carry On

When I was a young man
Out on the open road
Things were never easy
Always had a heavy load

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

My old man drank whiskey
Mixed with water in a glass
Drank so much liquor
Till he fell down on his ass

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

My poor mom was an angel
Straight down from heaven above
She cooked Christmas dinner
And filled it with lots of love

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

My grandma had a day job
Selling shoes and pants
My grandpa smoked tobacco
And drank Miller beer from a glass

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

I missed your dirty little war
Just by a day and a half
My friends all joined the Navy
And got busted smoking hash

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

I met a little woman
Sweetest thing you ever knew
Loved me in the morning
And loved me all night long

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

Them kids they drove me crazy
From sun up to sun down
But they gave me love
Never had a frown

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

I worked from nine to five
Just like a dumb ole dog
Driving in my car
Sleeping like a log

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

Had computers and cell phones
Faxes and PDA's
I think it would be better
If I threw them all away

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

Property and money
Things I knew nothing about
Cept you can't take them with you
When they put you in a box

But I had you with me
Helping to carry on

Now that I am an old man
Leaning on a fence
Things still ain't easy
But they make a little more sense

Cause I got you with me
Helping to carry on.
