To understand the story of reuben and Shorty
you must realize the
importance of the relationship between them
they were not friends of the acquaintance type,
traveling partners, lovers, or kinship
they were friends of the bonded type, blood brothers, soul mates,
joined at the hip type
like a uni-brow joined above the nose
you could shave them apart
but they would always grow back together
if you were to make comparisons
the Sun and Moon might come to mind
Shorty was like the sun, big, bright, strong, a literal bull in a china shop
clumsy but not awkward he made his presence known
with massive head and body gestures (and he drooled a lot)
he was a gentle giant, but a fierce warrior if threatened
reuben was like the moon, dark, sleek, fast, and graceful
he leapt boundlessly through life
(and through a few ladies windows at night)
his sharp senses and thirst for action
took him on many adventures
of which Shorty and I would have to follow
his clues and track him down
for reuben also had a propensity for finding trouble...
we had many places that we called home and reuben would travel
between them at his own convenience
not bothering to tell anyone when or where
he was going
with his speed it was difficult to keep up with him
especially if Daddy Barbeque was cooking (more on Daddy later) all
the way on the other side of town
The one thing that reuben and Shorty did have in common
was that they were both always hungry
I would sometimes find them together at McDonalds
begging handouts from parked cars
like the birds you see chasing french fries
preying on the people who looked like
they had a conscience or the ones who
seemed as if they gave a squat
about life in general
the two of them made quite a spectacle,
humorous to most, but it was not funny to me
the problem was neither one of them
ever had any money
and they had no real job skills or desire to work
but I always shared what I had with them
for we were friends...
